The research phase of the project was also important because it was necessary for the presenters of the program to master the content. What we learned about the fascinating Kuba people and the individual objects provided us with ideas for exploration of the culture through the experiential activities of the outreach program. Researching the Kuba objects in the collection and the history of the Kuba people was a necessary step in the program design. The curriculum specialists also offered advice on class sizes and fee structures. Curriculum specialists advised us the teachers would appreciate pre- and post-visit materials and activities that help put the program into context for the students. ![]() In the end, we also included activities related to the math and music curricula. social studies, and English curricula at the appropriate grade levels. We listened as they told us that the program should match the Standards of Learning for art. ![]() We also talked directly with teachers from public and private school systems in the area. The first and most important step for the project was to invite curriculum specialists from regional school systems to be a part of the planning. As the project emerged and took on a life of its own, a number of considerations in planning and implementing any outreach program came to light. How would we use these beautiful objects to show students a “slice of life” of the Kuba people? How could we design an exciting program that would help students relate a relatively obscure culture to their own lives and the world at large? What pathways to learning about the Kuba culture could be created to nurture individual differences in how children learn? How would we plan the logistics of such a program? The Outreach Program of California is working to get thousands of meals packaged and sent overseas. The need continues to be immediate and critical. The Outreach Program in partnership with donors and packaging associates across the US has already packed and shipped more than 3.3 million meals into Ukraine’s neighboring countries for humanitarian relief. Until there is a resolution, many organizations are working together to provide aid and resources to those affected. ![]() With the conflict in Ukraine, millions of people are fleeing to neighboring countries which is causing an increasing humanitarian crisis in the region. Through hands-on service projects, different community groups package thousands of meals that are high-protein, shelf-stable, and provide essential vitamins and minerals. A nonprofit founded in 2004, The Outreach Program has helped thousands of volunteers come together to provide over 675 million meals to the US and international feeding organizations.
